Changing Sand in Your Sand Filter We recommend changing the sand every 3 to 5 years.
1. Start off the motor to the filter.
2.Close the valves for the intake and outtake.
3. Remove the drain cap at the bottom of the filter tank and let drain for 2-3 hours.
4. After the tank has drained, remove the filter valve if on top or remove the top cap.
5. When opening the tank, if there is a stand pipe be careful not to move the pipe because it can break along with the laterals on the bottom.
6. Dig out the sand with a small cup (NOT a shovel) and again be careful of the pipe and laterals.
7. You can remove the stand pipe once the laterals are cleared from the sand.
8. Once you have removed the sand, clean and examine the laterals thoroughly.
9. Most laterals will unscrew, allowing easy removal from the tank.
10. Make sure the tank is clean and the laterals and stand pipe are in place and ready for sand.
11. Put back the drain cap.
12. Add water until the tank is half-full. This will cushion the laterals when you put the new sand in.
13. Place sand cover over Stand Pipe to prevent sand going down the pipe and into the lines.
14. Add Pool Filter Sand slowly and making sure not to damaged the laterals or Stand Pipe. Each filter will require a certain amount of sand. The label on the filter tank should state the amount needed. For example 200# Media equals 200lbs of Sand. The bags are 50lbs each.
15. Once you have replaced the sand, remove the sand cover and attach the valve or cap back to the filter tank.
16. Open the valves for the intake and outtake.
17. Before turning on the motor, turn the valve to backwash to clean the sand. After backwashing, rinse the sand, and then return valve to filter. Remember to turn off power between turning the valve to different cycles.
